Sea Shore Mosaic

Creativity with Treasures Found at the Beach

By Kate Rushford January 5, 2025

Living by the ocean means beach walks are part of our lives—often with children by our side. Along the way, little hands can’t resist collecting treasures: bits of sea glass, shells, smooth pebbles, and driftwood. These finds usually end up in pockets, then scattered across mantels, tucked away in drawers, or stashed in shoeboxes—quickly forgotten.

This activity is a beautiful way to celebrate both your child’s creativity and the natural wonders found along our shores.

Now’s the perfect time to bring those treasures back into the light—or even make a new collection on your next seaside stroll—for a fun family art project!

Sea Shore Mosaic Supplies:

  • Beach treasures: shells, sea glass, pebbles, driftwood, etc.
  • Stretched canvas (available at local craft stores)
  • Crafter’s glue

Instructions

Step 1: Plan Your Design
Encourage your child to dream up a sea-inspired subject. Ideas include mermaids, starfish, octopus, crabs, sea turtles, or whales. Have them lightly sketch the outline onto the canvas with a pencil.

Step 2: Add the Glue
Cover the sketched design with a generous layer of crafter’s glue.

Step 3: Place the Treasures
Arrange the shells, glass, and driftwood onto the glue-coated canvas to bring the design to life. Let your child experiment with colors and textures—it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Step 4: Let It Dry & Display

Allow to dry.  Display your little artist’s work and enjoy.  Remember to have them put their name on it and date it, so that you both can share that memory whenever you look at it.  Don’t be afraid to share picture to friends and family on your social media accounts!
